Summary:

Robert is different. He has Asperger's Syndrome. He experiences the world differently to 99% of the population. Follow his entertaining and highly empathetic story as he struggles to realise and accept who he really is, try to understand other people - which he cannot - and find a girlfriend. Especially find a girlfriend - he's decided it's his special project for the year. Accompanied on this transformative journey by his quirky flatmates, Chloe (who also has Asperger's, amongst other things), Stef (who hasn't, but doesn't mind) and their oddly-named kitten, Robert endures a myriad of awkward moments in his quest to meet a nice, normal girl...and not even a major earthquake will stop him.
This absorbing and humorous story is starkly told from Robert's point of view, through the kaleidoscope of autistic experience.
Thoughts:
Robert just wants to have a  normal  relationship with a girl which unfortunately for him is nearly impossible when he has been diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of Autism. He's spent years trying to understand questions of social etiquette such as, "why is there no ham in hamburger?" or " why is it that horrible things are not horrific, but terrible things are not terrific?" in order to eliminate any embarrassing  behaviors for himself. This year in college, his new goal is to find a girlfriend. When Robert meets Chloe, the girl who understands him and the one he's been hoping for, he may just realize that relationships are anything but normal.

Thank you to Kevin Berry for writing a book which is hilarious and truly displays the thoughts of someone on the Autism Spectrum. You have done your homework and I tip my hat to you, sir! This book was very entertaining and I really identified with the struggles of the main character, Robert as both a person who has worked with young adults with Autism and as a person who has been identified as having Asperger's Syndrome. I loved the format of every opening chapter especially the "books read lately." This book has definitely provided new and exciting reading material in the coming months!  Throughout the entire book, I felt as though I was sitting with Chloe and Robert at a small table in a coffee shop being the third observer to their back-and-forth banter.

I'm definitely buying this book to add to my collection of books about people with Autism.

  3. Thanks so much for the review, Katelynn. I'm glad you liked the book. You might like the sequel, Kaleidoscope, too -- it continues the story from Chloe's point of view.
