Summary:

Gabby's world is filled with daydreams. However, what began as an escape from her parents' arguments has now taken over her life. But with the help of a new teacher, Gabby the dreamer might just become Gabby the writer, and words that carried her away might allow her to soar. Written in vivid, accessible poems, this remarkable verse novel is a celebration of imagination, of friendship, of one girl's indomitable spirit, and of a teacher's ability to reach out and change a life.

Thoughts:

I was recently introduced to Nikki Grimes and her way with words after this book was recommended to me by a friend. It's amazing how such a small book can have such a powerful impact. Words have a way of leaving a mark-molding and shaping us into better versions of ourselves. They become our teachers.

Everyone can trace their success back to a single teacher-that one person- who recognized the importance of the human connection and built a relationship that left an everlasting imprint.

It's important to have that one person that cheerleader, saying, "You are somebody, you have places to go and people to impress." A person says it long enough and it starts to become apart of their core.  The main character, "Gabby" had one such teacher who believed she could be great until she believed it too.

Every kid deserves a champion. Thank you, Mr. Spicer for giving Nikki a piece of your heart so she could in turn give us a piece of hers.

Rating: 5/5

I received this book from my friendly, local library.

Words are important. To have an encourager, someone who will stand beside us and cheer on, is a great motivator during an obstacle in life.
