MLSRCW One: Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings

Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings

After searching through the stacks at my local library, I stumbled upon this acquatic gem. The jacket description immediately caught my attention:

"Freak of nature takes on a whole new meaning...

If she hadn't been so clueless, she might have seen it coming. But really, who expects to get into a relaxing bathtub after a stressful day of shopping for tankinis and come out with scales and a tail?

Most. Embarrassing. Moment. Ever.

Jade soon discovers she inherited her mermaid tendencies from her mom. But if Mom was a mermaid, how did she drown?

Jade is determined to find out. So how does a plus-size, aqua-phobic mer-girl go about doing that exactly? And how will Jade ever be able to explain her secret to her best friend, Cori, and to her crush, Luke?

This summer is about to get a lot more interesting..."

It turned out to be a great kick-off for the challenge as it was cute, quirky fast read which had me laughing and cheering for the heroine, Jade. She is a plus sized, awkward, and insecure teenager who many girls will identify with as a young teenager. Although Jade's mom was out of the picture in the beginning of the book, her father was very supportive throughout the whole book. My heart ached for Jade's dad as he is a single parent yet he tries his best to help his daughter in anyway possible. The ending provided a unique twist which I never saw coming and will definitely lead into the next book in this series. The author did a fantastic job at joining reality with fantasy. A great summer read.

  2. I usually don't read mermaid fiction because it always leaves me a bit disappointed, but this one actually sounds fun and you clearly enjoyed it, so perhaps I should give it a try! Thanks for the review :)

  3. Ahh, this one sounds really good! Has been on my radar for a while, but...you know...too many books, too little time :) Great review, though. I love how you keep them short and sweet!
