Alex as Well

Alyssa Brugman

PD: 01.15.15 by Henry Hoult & Co. (BYR)

Summary:

Alex is ready for things to change, in a big way. Everyone seems to think she’s a boy, but for Alex the whole boy/girl thing isn’t as simple as either/or, and when she decides girl is closer to the truth, no one knows how to react, least of all her parents. Undeterred, Alex begins to create a new identity for herself: ditching one school, enrolling in another, and throwing out most of her clothes. But the other Alex—the boy Alex—has a lot to say about that. Heartbreaking and droll in equal measures, Alex As Well is a brilliantly told story of exploring gender and sexuality, navigating friendships, and finding a place to belong.

Thoughts:

In July, my alma mater, Illinois State University joined a small group of progressive universities who decided to create gender-neutral symbols of a half man-half woman to be placed on family stalls throughout campus in an effort to create a "more inclusive environment."

Shortly after announcing their new change, news channels weren't sure how to react. Neither are the people in Alex's world when Alex comes out which is why I'm curious to read this book.

"It isn't about becoming another person-I am who I already am-I just want my body to reflect that. It's not like I'm suddenly changing from the person you've always known-this is more about your willingness to see who I've always been.

  2. Interesting title. I'm always fascinated by explorations of gender in science fiction, but sometimes the real-world applications are the most powerful.

Thanks for stopping by my WOW.

  4. This sounds like a good book. It must be really hard as a young person to have to go through questions of gender. I'm glad there are books like this.
